Curly Hair Tip #1: Hydration, Hydration, Hydration

Need I say more??? The number one reason your curls are misbehaving is because they are THIRSTY!!! Wouldn’t you begin to act a little “out of character “ if you were excessively parched?  Well, the same is true with your hair. You see, each strand is carefully constructed to form hair fibers containing keratin, amino acids, and various bonds. Although the largest portion, approximately 90% of the hair strand is made up of protein, the essential element that holds it all together in perfect balance are via water molecules. Without it, the hair would become dry, weak and brittle; lacking strength and structure. Therefore, consider applying a leave in moisturizer to the curls at the onset of dryness, regularly deep condition the hair and use thirst quenching hair care products in your overall curly hair care regimen. Curly Hair Tip #2: Clip your ends

Take a hint, when the ends of your tendrils begin to give you trouble, it is time to take action! Knowing that the ends are the oldest part of the hair, they are susceptible to more damage than any other area of their strand. Even when keeping your hair in tip-top shape, your ends will still need to be clipped regularly to ensure strength and stability. A few signals that communicate the need to trim include:

Knotty Ends

Also known as fairy knots, these occur when the ends are so dry they begin to behave badly. They essentially coil around themselves, ending in tiny knots that are impossible to unwind. When you see your hair doing this more often, it’s time for a trim.

More tangles

You will notice more activity toward the ends of the hair when the ends are ready to be clipped and if you look closely, you may see split ends. They will appear in the shape of the letter ‘y’ and if not treated properly can lead to further splitting up the hair shaft which eventually ends in breakage. The only remedy is through cutting. I recommend trimming your hair every 3 months for non-heat users and every 6-8 weeks for curly hair that practices heat styling.

A fallen curl pattern

When you see a strong curl pattern along the hair strand until you reach the very end of the hair, you may be experiencing a fallen curl pattern. This occurs when something disrupts the patterns on the hair such as split ends, fairy knots or excessive weakness or dryness. When you see a consistent change at the ends of your hair that is a sign that a trim is in order.

The good news… Just because you need to trim your hair does not mean you need to cut your hair off. This is typically ¼ of an inch to ½ of an inch for minimal damage. However if you have not been treating your hair properly consistently over a long period of time, you might want to consider trimming off more than 1-3 inches to have a fresher start.

Lack of length retention

Whenever you see that your hair is not consistently growing about ¼ to ½ inch per month, there is an obvious issue with breakage at the ends. If the breakage is in one key area, then you can analyze the activity that has occurred in that area of the hair to see what new measures to take to resolve that problem. For example, if the right side of your nape is shorter than your left side. However, if your hair is consistently remaining the same length all around, then you are probably observing a pattern of your hair breaking off where it needs to be trimmed. To remedy this situation, take a proactive approach but trimming your hair before it can break itself off. Schedule regular 10-week appointments with your hairdresser to receive a shampoo and deep conditioning treatment and trim.
